Ricky Williams Apple Leave a Comment

Most smartphones today all have the necessary features. So battery life has become a big deciding factor for many people. After all what good are all these new features if the device is dead? Well now that iOS 7 has been out for almost 2 weeks. What does Apple’s new iOS have that might help save user’s valuable battery life. Apple has made some enhancements to Siri in iOS 7. The digital assistant can now do a lot more than in previous iOS versions. Siri can now turn things on and off including Bluetooth, Wifi and Cellular Data. It might not seem like a big deal to have your Wifi, Cellular Data and Bluetooth on all the time but the radios do use battery power. So why have them on consuming power especially at times when they are not in use. Now it would be a pretty daunting task to turn them on and off manually whenever you leave the house, office, or wherever else you have or don’t have wifi, need or don’t need bluetooth. But now with Siri, iOS 7 makes it easy and this is one way iOS 7 can save you battery life. The only thing …

Ricky Williams Apple Leave a Comment

On Tuesday of this week, Sept. 10th, Apple held their event. We speculated on what we would get and talked about the other questions that still remained to be answered. Well now we have our answers. The iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iOS 7 were shown off so what did we get? Well we’re going to cover some of the details and also talk about some of the questions that are now created about where do they go form here. The video of the keynote is now available on the Apple site, go watch it. So to go through what we got to see at the keynote, there was the iPhone 5c (Android Free) The iPhone everyone thought was going to be cheap turned out to be “less expensive” instead. No one should have been surprised since Apple doesn’t do cheap and yet they were. When netbooks proliferated the computer landscape Apple did the MacBook Air. It was far from cheap but “less expensive” than a MacBook Pro. The iPhone 5c is the same. It is far from cheap but at $99 for a 16GB model on a 2 Year contract(US) it’s cheap enough that it becomes a throwaway phone. …

Like I said it will be watched by many so the live stream may be slow or un-responsive. Luckily many of the tech blogs will also be live blogging the event so it’s also a good idea to have their feed open too. Unfortunately all of the T3kd bloggers will be working so we will be unable to cover the event this year. However here are a few links to other blogs covering it, iMore and Engadget. iPad Maxi (non-Rumor)

Ricky Williams Apple Leave a Comment

I saw this rumor and immediately started laughing so hard I almost fell out of my chair. It’s a rainy day here in Canada as well as a few other places in the world so we need a little humor to make us laugh. So here is the latest non-rumor about the iPad Maxi, sorry I can’t say that with a straight face. I wonder if there will be a model with wings? Everyone blogging about this is quoting source, and I use that term lightly, Korean site ETNews.com who are claiming that Apple is working on a new iPad. An iPad to beat all other iPads measuring in at 12.9 inches diagonally. The best part of this rumor is that the iPad will be called, wait for it, wait for it, the “iPad Maxi”. Yes that is right the genius that is Apple, a company whose retail stores are brilliant at selling products and whose ads have been copied by many other manufacturers. Yes they if it can be believed would call this the iPad Maxi. ETNews.com is the same site that broke other rumors such as the iPhone 4s launching in late June 2011(actually launched October 2011) and …

iOS 7 Concepts

Ricky Williams Apple Leave a Comment

Now with under a month until WWDC the reveal of iOS 7 is nearing. T3kd already put up a post about what we want to see in iOS 7. With all the rumors of Sir Jony Ive stripping out Skeumorphic elements to give a very different look to the User Interface (UI). Many iOS 7 concepts are being released based on the perceived “Flatter” design. It is a pretty exciting time since some of the well known sources in the industry have heard that the UI looks so different polarizing filters are being used to prevent others from seeing the differences. It is also rumored that people working on the new OS X operating system (OS) have been pulled off to help finish up iOS 7 in time for the reveal. I have read, talked to and heard people who are talking about how much the iOS interface needs a change. But in the current mobile space with competitors bringing out new features where does a new interface rank? Me personally, I would rather Apple make changes and introduce features that make iOS easier and more intuitive to use. Things like the rumored Flickr and Vimeo system integration but also …

Mobile battery life could be getting better

Ricky Williams Mobile Leave a Comment

There have been countless posts about the new importance battery life plays as a deciding factor in mobile electronics. Most smartphones today do pretty much the same basics, equivalent of the point A to point B reference commonly used. So one of the biggest differentiator has become battery life, after all what good are all the features if you can’t use them? Well it seems that some new breakthroughs mean mobile battery life could be getting better eventually. There are some things that are being held back by the constraints of battery life.Take for example Siri, the digital personal assistant on Apple’s iOS devices. Currently the assistant has to be activated with a key press because having the device listen for audio ques would cause horrible battery life. This is just one example of a feature that could be made exponentially better if battery life was removed from the eqaution as a concern. Well then the new advancements that have been made at the University of Illinois could have a very big impact in that area. The article “Small in size, big on power” explains how the microbatteries offer phenominal power in their small size. The article explains that, The …

BiteSMS now has a quick compose widget (Jailbreak)

Ricky Williams Jailbreak/Root Leave a Comment

BiteSMS is one of the great Jailbreak apps for Jailbroken iOS devices. It is one of the reasons many people Jailbreak their devices and many return to Jailbreak. BiteSMS opens a pop up window for SMS/iMessages on the lock screen or inside an app. It allows a person to reply or dismiss the message without leaving the app or breaking their concentration and it is arguably one of the things many users wish Apple would impliment in stock iOS. Well BiteSMS now has a quick compose widget in the Notification Center. So now a user can create a new message without opening the app at all. All it requires is to pull down the Notification Center and there is a quick compose icon in the lower right corner. The new feature even has favorited contacts in the widget saving the user time composing messages to people they correspond with often. It looks slick, makes things easy and the best part is when it is combined with another Jailbreak app “LockInfo” you have access to the quick compose widget from the lock screen. The feature is in beta right now so you will have to add the beta repository as a …

Apple, don’t worry be happy

If you didn’t know yet Apple will be releasing their 2nd Quarter results today, actually in just under 2 hours from now. It will be covered by many blogs, talked about and read into for days to come by bloggers and also by the idiots on Wall St. I’m sure. ArsTechnica will be live blogging it as well as many other tech sites so be sure not to miss the action @ 2PM PDT(5PM EDT) today. Now doom and gloom has been forecasted for Apple for a while now, mostly thanks to brilliant Wall St. analysts, so it’s nothing new. I’m here to tell you that as far as it goes with Apple, don’t worry be happy. If you listen to the analysts on Wall St. you would think Apple is going down in flames and probably be tempted to sell any shares you own. This would be a mistake because you get such ridiculous rumors like “Apple is looking to replace Tim Cook” or sentiments that the iPhone and iPad are not selling well. Meanwhile if you look at the numbers carriers like Verizon have activated 4 million iPhones in the last quarter. You would get better information about …

Facebook chat heads are coming soon on iOS

Ricky Williams Apple Leave a Comment

I love that today Bloomberg reported that Facebook was working with Apple to bring Facebook Home or elements of it to iOS. Then The Next Web says Facebook is not in discussions with Apple. Low and behold if you were to look for app updates on iOS it seems the Facebook chat heads are coming soon on iOS. The chat heads are one element of Facebook Home and it looks to be coming to both iPhone and iPad soon. Just gotta love how the tech industry works, many people saying many things and then after denial it turns out to be true. Now you might remember that I said in a post that Apple probably wouldn’t get the full Facebook Home treatment but it would probably get elements of it. Well so far it seems that is just what might be happening. When I did an app update today on my iPad there was an update for the Facebook app. It lists “chat heads” as available for everyone soon.
