Hot! Should US Government Be Allowed to Control Us?

Ever since the Stop Online Piracy Act was brought up in congress and started getting more and more opposition, things have gotten weirder and weirder. The internet just isn’t the same as it used to be anymore. It started off with federal agents taking down MegaUpload which was only partly in the United States. For some reason they picked this peer-to-peer file sharing site over all the others and shut all of it down, not just US operations. That created a lot of controversy all over the internet from both sides, especially since this happened only a day after the January 18th protest.

Just a couple of days ago Congress announced that the bills were pretty much over and done with, for all we know. However we saw something else that indicated there might be some inside jobs going on in the Government that they aren’t telling us about. Twitter is now censoring their tweets and blocking certain tweets to specific countries. Twitter, which opposed SOPA is now giving into some of the things we were afraid would happen if SOPA was passed. Twitter has been an important medium for the Occupy protests and many uprisings in Libya and Egypt. Twitter realizes this but now they are censoring their users.

Now, the FBI has decided that they will step in. The FBI has announced that they plan to monitor social media to identify new security threats that may arise as well as the current state of our country. This might not just be the FBI either. It could pass out to other branches of the government and allow them to watch what we do online too. Along with cameras on every city block and GPS units being proposed as well, privacy is being lost all around us.

Some people who can’t get their acts together is what’s ruining it for the rest of us. Sure, there are some stupid people on the internet but hopefully they wouldn’t be stupid enough to go posting their plans to commit a felony. Also, the FBI won’t be like a follower. They will have access to your Facebook profiles no matter how locked down your privacy settings are. As if the government can’t monitor your online use now, if they get this power there is no doubt that they will know everything you say. That’s a bit creepy knowing that a government group has this kind of power. It’s an invasion of privacy but they can do it, because they’re the government.

This gives the government a level of control. By letting users know that they are always watching, users might not feel as comfortable to use something that used to be a great means of communication. Things like chats even could be monitored. Who knows, they could consider Skype a social network due to the new Facebook integration and monitor Skype calls.

Should the government be able to do this? Truth be told, they’re the government. We are the voting power that control whether or not people get elected, but they can control what goes on online which will influence who we vote for and who we don’t vote for. By monitoring social media, the government could start taking down things they don’t like so we can’t say anything bad about government officials and therefore will only know who to vote for based on what the mainstream media says. Sure, they won’t take down stuff right away but you just wait until they see something they don’t like.

I think the US government is attempting to turn the internet into a place where they can control everything that goes on. They’re already proven that they want that power, and they will do everything they can to get it. Thankfully, we the internet are doing a very good job of showing that we don’t approve of what they are doing, but big companies such as Facebook and Google are having to donating huge amounts of money to try to stop things. We have had physical protests however which shows the government that we aren’t just a bunch of blank faces behind computer screens and IP addresses, we actually exist. As long as we still have the power to voice our free speech online, we need to use this power to contact our congressmen and women and convince them that the internet needs to stay free. I don’t know what will happen, I hope our internet doesn’t become the same as other countries where it’s highly controlled. We will just have to fight and hope we win.

I just have one X rated question? Who the fuck do they think they are??

Back in the summer when we had riots here in the UK there was a lot of talk about shutting down Twitter and BB messaging to stop the rioters organising. Didn't happen but maybe it was because the authorities were monitoring these and following what the rioters were up to. If so, they sure did a bad job of keeping the police on the ground up to speed as the policing was woefully inadequate.

I guess ultimately its down to us the people... how much freedom do you want to keep balanced against how much power you want the authorities to have to catch criminals before they infringe your personal liberty and safety? Tough one f you ask me.

celtxian I'm glad they didn't. It's not the social networks fault. If people can't use Twitter and BB messaging they will just use email or Yahoo Groups, there's always an alternative

Great post, and Paul really knows his stuff. I have no problem with government "monitoring" social media, because that's exactly what my followers and friends do. When they want privileges that are "better" than the common user, that's when I'll start feeling more like they're Big Brother.

scubaham Yeah it's insane.... They're normal people like us they just fave FBI painted on their shirts

Good topic, good article. Why do governments always want to sniff around?

uDaeth 9 pts

TMStreetAnalyst Because they are the gov'ment. The gov'ment does what the gov'ment wants to do

No, controlling is never a solution.

Awesome article, the internet is great in so many ways. However what the government needs to understand is that the internet wasn't always around. I know it might be hard to beleive for the younger generation but alot of older people can remember the days when there was no internet. The point is that the world still spun on it's axis and people's lives still went on. So they will get to a point when people push back and who should be concerned more than anyone are the companies like Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc. who make their money from the internet. When people push back make no mistake if the government's control over social media goes far enough Facebook pages will disappear and along with it revenue. People can and will skip using the internet for the things that are more convenient. They will instead use it for the absolute basics that they need to and then what will these companies do as their profits flatline? The last point is that you would think in North America where alot of the factory jobs have gone to cheaper parts of the world they would think twice about crippling their advantage of easily available knowledge.

ricky_williams1 What's more convenient than the internet at this point in time?

I really think the fight to keep privacy is a losing battle. The government will never be transparent and there will always be levels of intrusion on our privacy no matter which bills are stopped or who sits in the Oval Office.

These are interesting times Paul and you raise some good points. Governments typically prey on fear and have a history of using national or local disasters as an excuse to usher in more 'invasion of privacy' or self-serving 'control' policies. It is the people's duty to keep government and regulators in check, and 'keep the bastards honest.'

uDaeth 9 pts

GayeCrispin It's a group effort unfortunately though and the people of this country are divided

Excellent post, Paul. Unfortunately, there is a huge push right now for the government to control the people it is supposed to be of, by and for. Control over who you can love and marry, control over the bodies of half the population, control over your ability to arm yourself to defend your own, control over what you say and think. We need to stop electing politicians who are stuck in the world of 2 decades or more ago and start paying attention to what the true will of the people is instead of allowing a few politicians to speak for the many.

I'm glad to see this being discussed. The more conversation about this the better!

What makes you think the government was not controlling you before? Governments always do what is in their best interest. Big Brother is always watching, only that this time round there is more awareness due to the advent of internet. So if you choose to use the internet or live in a certain country be prepared to be monitored and controlled. Just the cost of living in this century.

No, not in this country. However, you cannot control foreign government.

NicolasLiu I agree, which means it's going to get very complicated when everyone has their own different regulations on the internet which was supposed to be compatible with everyone

Interesting article about the level of control Governments are now looking to exert over their citizen's online activity. Don't know how this one is going to pan out and it's all part of the ongoing argument over who has jurisdiction over a transnational open entity like the internet.

alfamale156 Yeah it changes every day, pretty sad that our government is turning into control freaks.
