Hot! How to change OS X Lion login screen background

The login screen on OS X Lion is a new style now with user avatars. However the background is the same pattern used on iOS inside the app folders and it’s just as boring. Well I’m about to tell you how to change the background so read on.

If you’re like me you like to customize the look of your devices and my laptop is no different, you should see my iPhone. Since Lion dropped a week ago I have already grown tired of the login screen although it still wows me because it’s so different from past login screens. So I started trying to find out how to change the background wallpaper of the login screen. Well thanks to my guru of a friend Chris Lyn and some awesome guys on the Mac Themes Forum, which you can find here, it is now done. Now you know I’m going to share the information with you right. It’s quite easy so lets begin the process, read on.

You will find the background file at the following location /System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources and the file is called “NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png“. Before you change the file make sure you have a backup of the original file, I copied it to an external drive. Once you’ve made a copy get the image file you want to make the background and open it in your image editor. The image file should have an image resolution of 72 pixels per inch. I prefer to have my image as close to the screen resolution as possible but if not a little bigger is better or you will end up with a pixelated background when it’s scaled up.

If the image doesn’t have an image res of 72 pixels per inch it will not scale and you will end up with problems similar to the image below. Once you’re ready save the image as a png file and name it with the exact name NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png keeping the letter cases correct. Then try to move it to the system location above, you will be prompted that it can’t be done because it is a system file. Just click “Authenticate” and once you put in your password to authenticate you as the user it will make the change. Then reboot to see it in all it’s glory, I will put up the pictures I took of my new login screen in the gallery below as well as my Jailbroken iPhone just for your curiousity. Now here is what will happen if your image resolution is not 72 pixels per inch(below).

I followed the instructions above but my image is too big on the login screen. Most of the image is cut off. Is there a particular size that the image should be? What am I doing wrong here? The image I used is 1920 x 1200, 72 pixels/inch resolution. Here is the link to the image I used: http://cdn.ledfrog.com/uploads/2011/07/a_mac_os_x_...

could you link the image u used can't really find a better one

Thanks Matt for answering. If that is the one let me know I have the original and I can post it up or email it out.

I would like this wallpaper as well please

That link still works. If you want the original, email us at weber@t3kd.com

When I did this, my new background/wallpaper appears washed out (much brighter and duller than the original image). Is this happening for anyone else? Is there a fix or did I do something wrong?

My image is 1920 x 1200 with a 72 ppi. And I changed the file type to a png as demonstrated in the instructions. Any help would be appreciated.

I think that is normal, in so much as that is what I'm seeing too.
It is hard to tell from the sample pics above, but the original image the author used may normally be darker and richer.

So yeah, you are not alone.
